Electrolytic cell for copper oxide ore electrowinning process equipment

In the hydrometallurgical process of copper oxide ore, the electrolytic process is a critical step in obtaining high-purity cathode copper. The electrolytic cell, as the core equipment in this process, undertakes the crucial task of reducing and depositing copper ions.

Copper electrolytic cell

The electrolytic cell is a large structure lined with acid-resistant materials such as PVC. This design aims to resist chemical attack from the copper-rich electrolyte—the copper sulfate solution—within it, ensuring the stability of the equipment during long-term operation and providing a reliable space for the electrolytic reaction.

The anode is typically an insoluble anode such as a lead-calcium-tin alloy. During the current flow, the insoluble anode does not participate in the redox reaction but maintains a stable potential, providing a uniform electric field distribution throughout the electrolytic system, promoting the orderly migration of copper ions toward the cathode and ensuring the smooth progress of the electrolytic process.

The cathode is a stainless steel plate as the starting plate. When direct current is applied to the electrolytic cell, copper ions in the solution migrate toward the cathode under the influence of the electric field. On the cathode surface, the copper ions gain electrons, undergoing a reduction reaction: Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu, and metallic copper is gradually deposited on the stainless steel plate. As the reaction continues, the copper layer continues to thicken, eventually forming cathode copper with a certain thickness and quality.

During the production process, various process parameters within the electrolytic cell, such as current density, electrolyte temperature, and copper ion concentration, must be strictly controlled to ensure the quality and deposition efficiency of the cathode copper. Once the cathode copper reaches the specified thickness, it is peeled off from the stainless steel plate to obtain a high-purity cathode copper product that meets the standards.

With its scientific and reasonable design and precise process control, the electrolytic cell plays an irreplaceable role in the electrolytic process of copper oxide ore and is an important guarantee for the efficient utilization of copper resources and the sustainable development of the industry.
