Electrolytic Copper Refining: Cathode & Precious Metal Recovery

Release time:2026-05-19 12:17 Views:

Against the backdrop of structural growth in the global copper market, enhancing electrolytic refining efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and recovering valuable metals have emerged as core competencies for copper smelting enterprises.

Electrolytic Copper Equipment

We employ a "Copper Anode – Electrolysis – Copper Cathode" process: copper anodes produced via pyrometallurgical refining are cast into anode plates; these are then loaded into electrolytic cells, alternating with thin sheets of pure copper serving as starter sheets, while an aqueous solution of copper sulfate and sulfuric acid acts as the electrolyte. Upon the application of direct current, the copper at the anode—along with base metals possessing more negative electrochemical potentials—undergoes electrochemical dissolution and enters the solution. Conversely, precious metals and rare elements—such as gold, silver, selenium, and tellurium—remain insoluble; they settle at the bottom of the tank as "anode slime," facilitating their subsequent recovery. At the cathode, copper ions gain electrons and crystallize out of the solution, yielding copper cathodes with a purity of ≥99.99%; meanwhile, base metals remain dissolved in the electrolyte, from which they are periodically removed through purification.

Four Key Advantages—Validated by Data:

1. No Secondary Smelting Required:Copper anodes are loaded directly into anode frames for electrolysis, thereby eliminating the need for secondary smelting and saving on associated costs.

2. Clean Production: The electrolytic process generates no emissions of toxic or malodorous gases; the workshop environment remains air-fresh, fully complying with modern environmental protection standards.

3. Low-Risk Operation: The electrolyte consists of a low-concentration aqueous acid solution that poses no direct harm to human health, ensuring a safe working environment.

4. Exceptional Cost-Efficiency: The comprehensive cost of producing one ton of high-purity copper cathodes amounts to merely a few hundred RMB, achieving a combination of low energy consumption and high output value.

We offer not just equipment, but a complete solution for the electrolytic workshop—encompassing everything from anode casting and electrolytic cell design to current density optimization and comprehensive anode slime recovery processes.
